Philip Merivale letters to Mr. Brown and Bruce Humphries [manuscript], 1927-1932.

Item #1: 1927 Dec 28. Letter to Mr. Brown. Writes that he is beginning to be "impatient about that bloody book." He wants to send the book to an elderly lady, who may die before its publication. He adds, if the worth of a book may be valued by its gestation, this should be one of the grandest books in the world, since it is two and one half years since it was contracted. He wants to give a copy to his ailing mother as well as the elderly lady and they are not "immortal." In a postscript he adds, "Please do not ask for my address again. It's the same for the past nine years." Then he lists his address as the Players Club in New York City. Item #2: 1929 Apr 13. Letter to Mr. Brown. Thanks Brown for the statement and encloses check to settle the account. He had no idea of the volumes that had been sold, except for about 6 that he had heard about from the purchasers and those he had bought himself. He adds that he is not going to buy anymore and hopes to have a written statement this year by the 25th. In a postscript he writes that "he is completely baffled by the statement." Item #3: 1930 Oct 25. Letter to Mr. Brown. Writes that he encloses check to settle his account. He wonders whether Duffy's move will stimulate sales at all. He has heard that the Harvard Dramatic Club have experience and wish to produce "The Peace of Ferrara." He is happy to have them have it without fees if they will sell copies out front. Item #4: 1932 Nov 22. Letter to Bruce Humphries. Requests that Humphries send to the above address (the Drake Hotel) 6 copies of "The Peace of Ferrara," 3 copies each of the Knut of Roeshilde" and "The Wind Over the Water."
